Looking for a fun and thrilling activity? Emerald City Trapeze Arts is the place for you. From the moment you step inside the Old Canal Boiler Works building in SODO, you feel as if you are in the circus.
When I went as a part of a group of 30 people, we were split into two smaller groups and then the magic began. My group started at the full-sized flying trapeze rig, which included a platform, two trapeze bars, and a huge net below. We would be learning a short routine of maneuvers or “marks” on the bar, while harnessed in with the instructors controlling our momentum from the ground below. To reach the platform that was approximately 35 feet in the air, we had to climb a ladder all the way to the top to meet the instructor who would retrieve the bar for us and set us up for our swing. The scariest and hardest part was having to lean out over the net to grab the bar a few feet away, and then gathering the courage to jump. Once airborne, the instructor on the ground called out the marks for us to execute. We were given three turns, and on the last we could qualify for what they called “The Catch” by hitting all our marks exactly when the instructors said too. “The Catch” consisted of a professional trapeze artist who would grab on to your forearms at the end of the routine, then you would release the bar and drop from their hold into the net.
Once the aerial stunts were over, my group went on to do floor work. Taught by two people, we were given numerous stretches and balancing acts to do by ourselves, with a partner, and also in a group of four. All of the actions required us to find our center of gravity, and with that we could do many cool balancing routines (too complicated to describe).
Emerald City Trapeze Arts offers classes in trapeze, pole dancing, and other aerial arts. All are perfect activities to do as an individual, on a date, with friends, or as a group. The staff is very nice, and also incredibly helpful, whether you are in the air or booking an event. The facility itself is very well-kept and clean. During the time we were there they were remodeling to expand their usable space.
With only one other location in Maui, Hawaii, Emerald City Trapeze is a one-of-a-kind adventure that will not disappoint.
